Introduction to Singapore

  Demographic and Geographical Information
           Singapore is a small country, with a population of only 4 millions. Singapore has fast development and progressive in terms of economic growth and now became the Southeast Asian’s most important financial center and manufacturing hub. This make Singapore the world’s most prosperous and competitive place for business. Singapore is a very much cosmopolitan city that offers a harmonious blend of tradition and modern living. Although Singapore has a blend of the East and West, it still able to maintains the rich Asian culture and heritage. Singapore is renowned for not only its highest standards of living, but also one can assure the modern, safety, low crime rates and acceptional clean city. These can offer internationals students an indeal environemtn for study.

           Singapore or Republic of Singapore as now official known, is a small island, situated at the tip of the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia, approximately 1 degree north of the Equator (Sentosa island) and also surrounded by other small and 57 large islands that are off shore to Singapore. Singapore has a total land area of 685.4 square kilometer.

           In history, Singapore has gone through European colonization period or a British settlement. Later, Singapore became an independent state with self-governing. At present, Singapore is Republic and now it official name is Republic of Singapore, have a President as a head of State who administered and managed day-to-day concerns.

         The red lion head has been a Singapore nation’s icon due to a long history of Singapore. The name Singapore meaning ‘Lion City’ was derived from Malay the word Malay words singa meaning lion and pura meaning city. The National flower of Singapore is Vanda Miss Joaquim.

 Climate
          Because Singapore lies just north of the equator, Singapore has a very warm and humid climate throughout the year, with temperature ranging from 23 to 33 degrees Celsius. In the south of Thailand during November to January is a rainy season and from May until October is the hottest month period of the year.


  Population
           Singapore’s population is around 4.4 millions, majority comprises of 77% Chinese, 14% Malays, 8%Indians and 1% Eurasians and the rest of the population are of other descent. The main languages in Singapore: English, Malaya, Chinese (Mandarin), and Tamil.

 Religion
          Singapore is a multicultural and multi-religious country with its diversity of ethnic groups. The Government of Singapore has try to maintain ethnic harmony and therefore people have an absolutely freedom to practice their religions.         In Singapore you will find a diverse population of Chinese, Malay, Indian and other races, living harmoniously together. Due to this great diversity this makes its country very unique not only in terms of culture but also religions. In Singapore, people have an absolute freedom to practice their own religion. The four main religions are Islam, Taoism, Buddhism, Christanity, Hinduism, Skihism and Judaism. However the two most worship religions are Buddhism (42.5) and Christian (14.6).
