Education system in the US

Kindergarten starts at the age of 3
Elementary Schools starts at the age of 6, studying grade 1 – 6
Junior High School/High School, grade 7 and 8 is junior high school, and 9 – 12 is senior high school. After graduating grade 12 students will
be 18 years old, the students will now study the foundation subjects like English, Math, science, physical education, and social study and choose
to study foreign languages like German or Spain.
Higher Education, there are more than 3,000 institutions both state-funded and independent school, divided into 4 categories:
2 years junior colleges and community colleges, there are 2 programs
1. Transfer Track, 2 years foundation for bachelor which is a compulsory course, where after the credits will be transferred to universities both state-fund and independence, and continue another 3 – 4 years.
2. Terminal/Vocational Track a diploma program, after 2 years an Associate Degree will be received in the course studied.
Colleges a 4 years course, some may continue to Masters Degree. American colleges are equivalent to university level.
University teaches Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral Degree.
Institute of Technology teaches Bachelor, Masters and Doctoral Degree emphasizing on science and technology.

Applications
          For Bachelor Degree, there must be a TOEFL score of 500, for Masters and Doctoral TOEFL must be 550. If applying 
for MBA, GMAT must be taken and in some courses like Communication, Engineering, GRE is needed.

Term time differs in each state
Semester system, in one year there will be 2 semesters and 1 summer, 16 weeks per semester:
         Fall Semester August – December
         Spring Semester January – May
         Summer Session June – August
Quarter system, in one year there will be 4 quarters, 10 weeks per quarter:
         Fall Quarter September – December
         Winter Quarter January – March
         Spring Quarter April – June
         Summer Quarter June - August
Trimester system:
        First Trimester September - December
        Second Trimester January - April
        Third Trimester May - August
4-1-4 system is a new system, divided into 2 sessions, separated by short sessions called Interim for 
students to perform self research by taking field trips:
        Fall Semester August – December
        Interim January
        Spring Semester February – May

Documents and application process
        1. Find documents for finding the course and institutions
        2. Prepare the documents for applying

English course application
Fees according to the institution, paid by credit card or Bank draft paid in the name of the institution
Letter assuring monetary status from the bank, diverting Baht into US Dollar
Copy of passport, the page with photo and the page with a change of name (if any)

Degree course application
Tuition fees according to the institute, pay through credit card or bank draft in the name of the institution
Monetary confirmation letter from the bank, diverting Baht in to US Dollar
Copy of passport photo page and the page with a change of name or family name (if any)
Transcript, some institutions may want it in enclosed
3 recommendation letters
Copy of TOEFL (have the test center send the real one to the institute)
Copy of GMAT (if applying for MBA) or GRE (if applying for Communication, Engineering and Science), 
the test center will send the real one to the institute
Work confirmation letter and resume
Statement of purpose

               Note: All application documents must be in English and no copies shall be used

3. Application form and accommodation reserved documents of the institute, including application documents with payment through EdNet
4. 1 – 2 weeks wait for I-20 and acceptance letter from the institute, during this time preparation of visa application should be in process
5. When I-20 and the acceptance letter is received along with the according payment details:
        Tuition fees, Health insurance fee
        Accommodation fees
        Traveling pick-up fees from the airport, other expenses (if any)
6. Submit the visa form at the American Embassy in Bangkok or in Chiangmai from Monday – Friday between 7.00 – 10.00 according to your canfirmed interview date.
7. When the student visa had been approved, please identify the date and time of travel for 
plane ticket purchase, submit accommodation details to EdNet for arranging a pick-up at the destination airport
8. Pay for the first 2 – 4 weeks before traveling through credit card, transfer through bank account or bank draft according to the institute specification

United States of America
has an area of around 378,695 square mile, 18 times the size of Thailand, population of 300 million (2007).)

Geography
          America is a country with various geography, whether its rain forest, desert, mountains, highland and lowland. America has a wide land space because it consists of 48 states, including Alaska in the North of Canada and Hawaii in the Pacific, 3200 kilometers away from the mainland. North connected to Canada, South connected to Mexico and Mexico bay, the East connected to the Artic Ocean and the West is connected to the Pacific Ocean.

          America consists of 50 states and one controlled area, which is Washington DC, having Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean and Alaska in the North of Canada, other 48 states have been separated into the following 7 areas:

Northwest States Washington, Oregon, Idaho
Southwest States California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona
North Central States

Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, South
Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri

Climate
          America has all the conditions imaginable, from the 45 degree desert to snowing, tornado, bush fire and earthquake.
There is a total different in the center of the country between the summer and winter season, the coldest will be in January, and the hottest will be in July.
In the East, there is also a difference between summer and winter; however, it is not like in the country’s central location.
Along the seashore of the West and the West, in winter is not so cold, in the summer however, the weather is like in the equator.

The American 4 seasons
Winter : December – February
Spring : March –May
Summer : June – August
Fall : September - November

Time zones
Eastern Time Zone (ETZ): 12 hours behind Thailand, but between March – April, the time will be 1 hour faster, called Daylight Saving Time making it 13 hours slower than Thailand. States within this area are: Boston, New York, Washington D.C., Miami and Cleveland.
Central Time Zone (CTZ): 13 hours slower than Thailand, during Daylight Saving Time it will increase to be 14 hours slower. States within this area are: Chicago and New Orleans.
Mountain Time Zone (MTZ): 14 hours slower than in Thailand, during Daylight Saving Time it will increase to be 15 hours. States within this area are: Denver and Phoenix.
Pacific Time Zone (PTZ): 15 hours slower than in Thailand, during Daylight Saving Time it will increase to be 16 hours. States within this area are: San Francisco, Seattle, Hawaii.



Population
          America has been known as the “Melting Pot”, meaning people from different backgrounds coming together as one. The natives are Red Indians; afterwards the English and Netherlands traveled looking for opportunities. Nowadays, American populations are 75% white, moreover, there are black skinned people brought from Africa for slavery. African-American people in the early days lived in the South of the country, nevertheless, as time moved on they are living all over the country for instance Washington D.C., Chicago and especially in New York. There are 13% of Hispanic or Spanish descent, and 4% of Asians, including one third of Hawaiian population are Japanese.

Religio
          American’s have the freedom to choose which ever religion they desire; they in fact do not have to choose any religion at all. Christian Protastance has been mostly chosen.

Economy
          The American economy is a freedom system, most American’s are in the middle class, there are very little population on the high or low end. The government has a strong influence same as other countries. The government supports exporting, electricity and scientific advice to farmers and insure the low cost of crops, responsible for food and medicine quality control, insure deposits and loans, support education and natural resources. One third of the country is forest, making it beneficial for commerce and flooding protection. The land is filled with lots of minerals like iron, coal, oil field, natural gas, zinc, copper, silver and phosphate.
